From my early teenage years, I have been an avid consumer of news images from the Civil Rights Movement, wars, sports, and politics, which invited me to explore world affairs and celebrate leadership. The year 1963 was a turning point for me when I could not take myself away from the television during the period of the March on Washington led by Martin Luther King, and the assassination and funeral of President John F. Kennedy.
As I got older my belief in passionate and responsible leadership as the necessity for change emboldened me to assume responsibility for becoming a change agent. I admired like many from my generation, King, Malcom X, Nelson Mandela, creatives--writers, poets, musicians, and actors, and members of the pro sports community who used their talent and celebrity to advocate on behalf of social justice.
On occasion, I received commissions from sports teams, and businesses to create posters promoting African American achievers.
