Growing up in the 1950-60s, there were few playgrounds near where I lived, yet we often created our own play space on the blacktop streets, and brick and stucco walls of nearby buildings. Manny homes had large families and it seemed like there was always a large group of similar-aged playmates. These were the wonder years. We engaged in street games such as half-ball, wall ball, dead block, and wire ball. We also had a form of baseball that involved a broomstick and half cut section of a tennis ball. We consistently interacted with each other outdoors and built a sense of belonging that would carry well into adulthood. I often took pictures in other neighborhoods around the city to explore this theme.
